A. Kai Mumpfield, LICSW, PIP, is a native Alabamian with deep community roots, Kai grew up in an environment many would call undesirable. Yet, it was there she learned the values of respect, compassion, service, and hard work—values that remain at the core of her identity and her journey to becoming a social worker. Kai’s career began in 2003 with a BSW from Auburn University, inspired by a community and church member. She continued her education with an MSW from the University of Maryland-Baltimore in 2006, interning with the Mayor’s Office of Children, Youth and Families, and serving in a local high school. Her diverse experience spans child welfare, therapeutic programs, children’s therapy, medical social work, adoption support, and training and administration.

Currently, Kai is the Director of Field Education in the Department of Social Work at Alabama State University and serves on the Alabama Board of Social Work Examiners. Her career is not just a series of jobs but a collection of assignments that have allowed her to grow, push boundaries, and serve in ways she never imagined possible. What Kai loves most about being a social worker is the privilege to impact, empower, and love on someone in a way that could change the trajectory of their life. Even on her worst days, the emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges are a pleasure, as they offer the opportunity to serve others genuinely and bring great gains. Kai’s passion extends to helping future social workers, ensuring they enter the field for the right reasons and with a clear understanding of the journey ahead. She wouldn’t trade this life for anything, as it’s not just what she does—it’s who she is.
